Before the railway extension to Tungamah and Yarrawonga in 1886, St James was the drop off point for all of the wheat from Tungamah to the North, the Warby Ranges to the East and Yabba to the West. The stacks of wheat were placed as close as possible to the railway track as to facilitate loading on to the Steam Trains. The Grain Elevators Board was Constituted in 1934, but it was 10 more years till St James Silo received the first bulk load of wheat. The Holmes family made the first delivery of wheat to the silo, George Berthun delivered the first bulk load and George Parker was the Officer in charge from 1943-1972 followed by John Leary.
